Welcome!
The consultations and forms required when pursuing outside professional activities the UC deems "Category 1" can be a bit of a pain to navigate. The Blue Cluster staff have designed this tool to help you prepare those Category 1 requests in OATS.
Before You Begin
- Category I activities require prior approval. Thank you for doing your best to get this done!
- This guide focuses on academic-year (APM-025) faculty. If you're in Economics or History, that's you!
- Time Limits: Academic-year faculty can spend up to 39 days (312 hours) per academic year on Categories I & II combined.
After completing two quick steps, you'll receive either a completed APM-025 PDF you can upload directly to OATS, or a completed PDF alongside detailed instructions and email drafts for follow-up consultations with other campus offices.
1. Activity Details
Please provide the details required for the APM-025 form. This information will be used to fill out your PDF.
Explain how the outside professional activity will not interfere with your faculty obligations.
Explain how the activity enhances the University of California's mission or provides a public benefit.
Logistics
Will you receive any compensation from the UC over the summer, whether for teaching or research?
Will you receive a formal appointment at the outside entity?
Will you be compensated by the outside entity for this activity?

2. Screening Questions
To expedite any required consultations, please answer the following questions. Your answers will be included in your request.
Your APM-025 Request is Ready
Download your completed form and initiate any required consultations below.
APM-025 Form Ready
We have pre-filled the official PDF with your details and selections. You must attach this to your OATS request.
Consultation Required
Based on your activity type, you are required to consult with campus offices well in advance of your start date.
Please initiate your consultations by clicking the buttons below. An email will be drafted for you, so all you need to do is add the PDF we generated above (and any written agreements concerning the outside activity), add your salutation of choice, and hit send. Of course, you can modify it as you see fit, too.
Please note that you must email both of the offices listed below.
Final Step: Submit Request
Once the results of your consultation(s) arrive, please forward the correspondence, along with your finalized form to bcpersonnel@ucdavis.edu for processing.
